Aging Populations and Public Pension Schemes
Autor: Chand, Sheetal K.; Jaeger, Albert
Año: 1996
Resumen: This paper discusses a study analyzing aging populations and public pension schemes. An aging society is characterized by a growing proportion of the retired to the active working population. The study examines the pension-related aging problem primarily from a fiscal perspective. It analyzes how prospective demographic developments that affect the proportion of the pensionable elderly affect pension outlays. It confirms that very serious fiscal stresses are in prospect for most industrial economies. Addressing such problems satisfactorily will require major actions early, given the long lead times involved in reforming a pension fund's financial position.

Kingdom of the Netherlands - Netherlands: Selected Issues
Autor: Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI)
Año: 1996
Resumen: This Selected Issues paper examines the long-term issues with pension expenditures in the Netherlands. The paper highlights that the public pension for a single person is equal to 70 percent of the (statutory) minimum wage. The minimum wage and public pensions thus move in lock-step; they are both by law indexed to contract wages in the private sector. This paper examines the structural policies of the Netherlands. Real wages and employment growth are also analyzed.

The Italian Public Pension System
Autor: Canziani, Patrizia; Demekas, Dimitri G.
Año: 1995
Resumen: Public pension expenditure in Italy has been growing rapidly in the last three decades and is now among the highest in industrialized countries. Despite recent reforms, benefits remain generous by international standards and, unless additional measures are taken, the financial situation of the system will deteriorate in the long term. The paper reviews the current system, its history, and its prospects, and examines through simulations the long-run effects of alternative pension reform options.

The Spanish Social Security: Prospects of the Pension and Health-Care Systems
Autor: Ferreira Levy, Joaquim Vieira
Año: 1995
Resumen: The social security system in Spain has steadily expanded since the late 1970s. Currently, social security expenditure exceeds 15 percent of GDP, being a factor of fiscal imbalance. This paper reviews achievements and the current situation of the social security system, discusses changes in the financing of health-care expenditure in view of the need for fiscal consolidation by the general government, and analyzes the scope for a partial prefunding of future liabilities of the pension system.

Año: 1995
Resumen: Sweden's economy in the early 1990s has been characterized by a deep recession, high unemployment, a ballooning public sector budgete deficit, and a decline in the value of the currency- developments that have raised questions about the country's capacity to sustain its comprehensive welfare state. This study provides an analysis of recent economic developments in a longer-term context and assesses their implications for future policies.
